Droughts reduced India GDP by 2-5% over 20 years: UN
NEW DELHI: The number and duration of droughts has risen 29% globally since 2000 and the effect of severe droughts is estimated to have reduced India’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2-5% over the 20 years from 1998 to 2017, said a new report from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) released on Wednesday.
While calling for multiple actions, including land restoration to reduce the risk, the report released on the sidelines of the ongoing 15th session of the UNCCD conference (COP15) at Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, also flagged that the droughts represent 15% of natural disasters globally but took the largest human toll — appromately 6,50,000 deaths in 50 years (1970-2019).
Globally, droughts caused economic losses of roughly $124 billion during that period. Though severe drought affected Africa more than any other continent with over 300 events recorded in the past 100 years, accounting for 44% of the global total, the highest total number of humans affected by drought were in Asia.
“We are at a crossroads when it comes to managing drought. We need to steer toward the solutions rather than continuing with destructive actions, believing that marginal change can heal sy emic failure,” said Ibrahim Thiaw, executive secretary of the UNCCD, while calling for making a full global commitment to drought preparedness and resilience in all regions a top priority.
“我们正处于应对干旱的十字路口。我们需要找出解决方案，而不是继续采取破坏性的行动，相信小小的改变可以治愈系统性的失败，”《联合国荒漠化公约》执行秘书 Ibrahim Thiaw说。他同时呼吁全球所有地区做好抗旱和恢复准备，作为首要任务
Both civilians died after the heartless sh ting that goes ag inst the so-called rules of war that outlaw the targeting of civilians. CNN has identified the victims. One was the owner of the vehicle dealership that was loed, whose family does not want to be named. The other was Leonid Oleksiyovych Plyats, a 68-year-old grandfather who worked as a guard there. Russian soldiers are behaving no different from the ISIS in Syria and Iraq and are looting and killing innocent civilians.,Really shamef ...
另一位是68岁的祖父Leonid Oleksiyovych Plyats，他在那里当警卫。
Finally it is the reduced and hopefully the gross DP will increase over the next few years

Yet lacs of TMCs of water goes waste onto sea every monsoon.
if deserts in middle East are being turned to crop bearing oasis and small patches of land in Israel are cultivated with high yield technique then we can do it here... mindset, will, and yes involvement of big private players would help...

What about the UN which has been reduced to irrelevance and a laughing stock. What kind of drought did it go through.
this is only due to global warning
GOI should control the population growth. Huge population is behind all these problems.

Blame it on anything but mis management by Feku go nment. This time drought was the cause which happened due to Nehru n congress
UN has not mentioned that the root cause of the ecological imbnce is the Europe and USA.
Hence proved modi is paunoti...since he become CM of Gujarat God started punishing us with drought...only option is to remove mosi and make god happy again

Oh. Now loss of gdp is on god?
Only planting trees on a war scale in every nook and corner can prevent global warming and extreme harsh climates

Modi go nment n Gadkari are cutting trees for highways merrily. Who is bothered about ecology n environment!
Whoever had the idea of growing sugarcane in Vidarbha region, needs to be resurrected from the dead, and given a thrashing. Vidarbha should grow less water intensive crops. Let sugarcane be grown in Western UP, and Andhra only. And maybe a bit in flood prone Bihar.
ONLY because of Nehru, Gandhiji and Congress. Jai Shri Ram..!!
